In spring 1947, Cartier-Bresson co-founded Magnum Photos, a cooperative picture agency owned by its members. Henri was assigned to India and China. He achieved international recognition for his coverage of Gandhi’s funeral in India in 1948 and the last (1949) stage of the Chinese Civil War.

Cartier-Bresson published his book “Images à la sauvette” or “The Decisive Moment”. The book’s cover was drawn by Henri Matisse. Henri also received numerous awards including the A.S.M.P. Award, Overseas Press Club of America Award, and the Grand Prix National de la Photographie.
