Mac Kenzie Childs Furniture

I forgot about Mac Kenzies Childs Store, 20 years ago. I still love it and now I love their furniture because of how they combine the colors, texture and material. I think they are influenced by Memphis design. Put any piece in the house and it becomes an instant art work, may it be a kettle or even a napkin.

This is such an inspiration to me that I think I could paint my plain furniture to something like this and make it my own. Here are some of my favorite pieces.

What do you think?

ROI for Twitter

@Twitter. If Twitter wants to bring more ROI, ads can play a larger part to the picture. This is my solution and that is to design all the ads in black n white, full bleed in width for mobile devices for every other 5 tweets or every one vertical swap, there could be an ad, because that gives a visual break to the tweets and help in the reading process.

Right now, the white background with the world cup info is not doing the advertisers any justice as it is too light.

Before
The ad on the top has regress into the background.

After
The ads stands out but not overpowering the rest of the tweets.
Do not think that color is the only way of getting attention. Successful design is how you combine the design elements to make the visual work.

Inspiration for Coffee Owners

I like to share this story to everyone I know. I really think this is such a great idea for being supportive to our community. Won't this be great if Peets or Starbucks could do such an incredible gesture?

Here goes the beautiful story:
I sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town of Venice (Italy), the city of lights and water. As we enjoyed our coffee, a man entered and sat at an empty table beside us. He called the waiter and placed his order saying, ‘Two cups of coffee, one of them there on the wall.’ We heard this order with rather interest and observed that he was served with one cup of coffee but he paid for two.

As soon as he left, the waiter pasted a piece of paper on the wall saying ‘A Cup of Coffee’.

While we were still there, two other men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table and one on the wall. They had the two cups of coffee but paid for three and left. This time also, the waiter did the same; he pasted a piece of paper on the wall saying, ‘A Cup of Coffee’.

It was something unique and perplexing for us. We finished our coffee, paid the bill and left.

After a few days, we had a chance to go to this coffee shop again. While we were enjoying our coffee, a man poorly dressed entered. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, 'One cup of coffee from the wall'.
The waiter served coffee to this man with the customary respect and dignity. The man had his coffee and left without paying.

We were amazed to watch all this, as the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the dust bin. Now it was no surprise for us – the matter was very clear. The great respect for the needy shown by the inhabitants of this town made our eyes well up in tears.

Ponder upon the need of what this man wanted... He enters the coffee shop without having to lower his self-esteem… he has no need to ask for a free cup of coffee… without asking or knowing about the one who is giving this cup of coffee to him. He only looked at the wall, placed an order for himself, enjoyed his coffee and left.

6 Creative Everyday Things...

... That Shows Form And Function

Moo MicroFibre Slippers: You know how some little kids are like pets? They have no idea of hygiene or organization and it takes a lot out of you to train them. Sometimes it is utterly impossible... so you have to work around them. This natural cleaning slipper is a great creative way that shows form and function.  I do wish they make it for adults too... It is cute right?

Mr Tea Infuser: Aweee... he is so adorable in my tea mug. My chubby companion that will keep me warm in cold winter days. There is something in this design which is enchanting and compelling to buy for gifts and to own it. First I think it is the way he sits in the cup, and he has a belly that house my exclusive tea leaves as it oozes the tea fragrance as it infusers. What a pal!

Cotton Swaps Noir: Have you ever seen black cotton swaps? For Noir lovers like myself... this is the ultimate and beyond. Imagine - black decor, minimalistic and stylish in the bathroom vanity. Place this in a simple, Swiss designed glass container and you got the ultimate original look that your guest will talk about and remember.

The Eco-Amp: I own a smart phone that is not loud enough in crowded places. Maybe I am hard on hearing and I do not usually carry a headphone with me all the time. This eco-amplifier would be an emergency solution as it is light weight, flat and easily carried. What wonderful designs and colors to choose from too. Great solution Eco-Amp!

Giant Clip On: I love to have my morning coffee or tea with me when I work. This is a great resource of space saving by clipping your mug to your table. What a great idea! And it is bright enough to catch the attention of not spilling. I love the lime one very much.

Monster Key Caps: Have you ever had so many similar keys that you wish that there was a identifier? I vote for this awesome monster key caps. It is creative and fun that makes your key holder a conversational connector.

I think this makes great gifts for any occasion and are less than $20. Creative and useful gadgets usually are. Most of all they are appreciated and have a lasting memory.

Team Building

Would you like to create a cool team building environment for designers? This is one great way to get your creative team on the ball by making Paper Weave Greeting Cards. I found this site and I thought what a great idea to gel the team together to create something unique, fun and creative.

Why do we need team building? In our busy schedules, we take it for granted that people would just mingle on their own, forming groups they prefer. When they have to work with others, outside their group, cliques may already be formed, may caused friction, or hinder work performance. Creating an environment of cohesiveness, embraces communication of openness, flexibility, amicability, and the opportunity to work together in better or different dynamics. We all know that great teams are crucial to the performance of making a great company.

Start Your Business You Are Passionate About

Starting your very own business is a good thing even though you already have a job. In today's economy, people are getting laid off left and right. Even though you are fantastic at your job, it is not the company that does not want you, it may be the people above you that are in control of your destiny. One has to be prepared for anything and having a lucrative business at the side, could ensure your safety net.

Wouldn't it be great if you could do something you love and are passionate about? Having the extra income to buy what you wish or travel in style for pleasure, or even save for a rainy day is indeed a security measure.

The internet really opens up many possibilities. On-line business is one of the most inexpensive way to start a business without incurring leasing and renting cost. There's one big expense, less to worry about. Moreover, it can be worldwide and the opportunities are countless.

First step first. Start dreaming and visualizing about what you really want to do. How does your business impact the world or people? Brainstorm with your friends and family - not negative people please, but people who are open to ideas... that add value to your vision. After all, your idea/s is at the beginning level, and you need to see all angles and possibilities. Iron out the negatives in the second stage of what could be. Otherwise, there is no hope that new, great ideas being born. Being positive as an entrepreneur is a tool that can drive you forward. Nothing is Impossible.

Do not limit yourself to just one business idea but have many that you love. Richard Branson himself, CEO of Virgin Airlines has more than 400 companies. Sometimes when you talk to people about your ideas, you may find quality partners that could add value to you and your business.

Stay Foolish. Stay Hungry. - Steve Jobs, former CEO of Apple, Inc.

The Venus Project

The Venus Project advocates an alternative vision for a sustainable new world civilization unlike any social-economic system that has gone before. It calls for a straightforward redesign of a culture, in which the age-old inadequacies of war, poverty, hunger, debt, and unnecessary human suffering are viewed not only as avoidable, but totally unacceptable.

Jacque Fresco: Futurist
Mr. Fresco's background includes industrial design and social engineering, as well as being a forerunner in the field of Human Factors. Mr. Fresco has worked as both designer and inventor in a wide range of fields spanning from biomedical innovations to totally integrated social systems.

The Venus Project reflects the culmination of Jacque Fresco's life work: the integration of the best of science and technology into a comprehensive plan for a new society based on human and environmental concern. It is a global vision of hope for the future of humankind in our technological age.

A major documentary, titled Future By Design, on the life, designs and philosophy of Jacque Fresco in now available. This is produced by Academy Award Nominated and Emmy Winning filmmaker, William Gazecki. The film Zeitgeist Addendum featuring Jacque Fresco and The Venus Project produced by Peter Joseph was recently released. It can be viewed at www.zeitgeistaddendum.com

Japanese Crest

I stumbled upon a educational site about Japanese family clans and crests. Now when we use some graphics, we can refer to the reasons and have more meaning to design.

Jackson Pollock with Fractual Expressionism

In contrast to the broken lines painted by conventional brush contact with the canvas surface, Jackson Pollock used a constant stream of paint to produce a uniquely continuous trajectory as it splattered on to the canvas below. A typical canvas would be reworked many times over a period of several months, with Pollock building a dense web of paint trajectories. This repetitive, cumulative, "continuous dynamic" painting process is strikingly similar to the way patterns in Nature evolve.

Other parallels with natural processes are also apparent. Gravity plays a central role for both Pollock and Nature. Furthermore, by abandoning the easel, the horizontal canvas became for Pollock a physical terrain to be traversed. His approach in working from all four sides replicated the isotropy (having the same properties in all directions) and homogeneity of many natural patterns. His canvases were also large and unframed, similar to a natural environment. Can these shared characteristics be the signature of a deeper common approach?

A Healthy Road Coach?

I really think that "Road Coaches" do not have to be unhealthy. They are just food on wheels after all.
I like to expand on the idea of having "Road Coach" feeding better and more exotic food to the public.
How about a "Jumba Juice"type of road coaches?
Or Peets on Wheels
or China Wheelie
or Taj at Your Door

I like this idea that says "Curry Up". What a cool idea...
Things can be so cool if it is design just right and hype...

New Design For US Currency?

Boy! What a change it is. The question is will it affect or improve the economy? No it will not. But it will make a positive impact. The US currency needs some distinction right now... especially in color. It is a on going problem.

However, I absolutely love the design of the new notes. It is very Swiss influence in design. I think that some elements could be incorporated with the old design so that there is some recognition. The US dollar is very recognizable currently and I like that.

Good job on the design. It is outstanding!

Improvements for Blogger

I love Blogger and I recommend this site for anyone who wants to control what they write on their site. One reason is because it is part of Google and obviously - part of the greatest search engine... you are SEO automatically.

Here is what I like to see improved: I think the Blogger should house an automatic fan page with their pictures and email address uploaded on each site, also automatically. This will enable Google to also get more fans through us, bloggers and viewers.

See this example that I love:
http://whoknewsanantonio.com/about/
or
http://twitter.com/shamikodesign
Twitter also have it inbuilt.

So if Google can hear me... I think this feature will be very helpful in leads generating and for everyone,

Aweesome 3-D Muralist

Edgar Mueller.  This artist is simply awesome. 3D Pavement Art - A Master of street painting uses the street as a canvas. If one looks from the right spot, its three-dimensional painting becomes the perfect illusion. He paints over large areas of urban public life and gives them a new appearance, thereby challenging the perceptions of passers-by.

25 Lessons from Seth Godin

I love Seth Godin Philosophies and a couple of them are:

1) Success is a skill. Seth’s philosophy on success is — “it’s possible to enjoy your job, to do the right thing, to be transparent, to give more than you get and to be successful, all at the same time.” It takes work. Surround yourself with people who are succeeding. You become who you hang with. By surrounding yourself with people who are succeeding, you’ll learn what’s working and what’s not. You can model their success and open doors that you might otherwise not see. Seth on successful people – “”Successful people rarely confuse a can-do attitude with a smart plan. But they realize that one without the other is unlikely to get you very far.”

2) Being the best is the best place to be. It’s better to be the best. People pick the market leaders and they narrow their choices to the top. Seth says, “Being the best in the world is seriously underrated.” According to Seth, best in the world is relative – “It’s best for them, right now based on what they believe and in their world, the one they have access to.”

{ I'd say: be the best you can be and the word is STRIVE... }

In the Dip, Seth shares 7 reasons why you might fail to become the best in the world:
a) You run out of time,
b) you run out of money,
c) you get scared,
d) you’re not serious about it,
e) you lose interest or enthusiasm and settle for being mediocre,
f) you focus on the short term instead of the long,
g) you pick the wrong thing at which to be the best in the world.

3) Be missed. Seth on how to be missed — “Connect, create meaning, make a difference, matter, be missed.”

4) Success is a hierarchy. Seth teaches us the hierarchy of success:
a) Attitude, b) Approach, c) Goals, d) Strategy, d) Tactic,s f) Execution

5) Don’t do A as a calculated tactic to get B. Do A because you believe in it.
Seth on success – “If we define success as the ability to make a living doing what I do, I’d say the following:
a) No ulterior motive. I rarely do A as a calculated tactic to get B. I do A because I believe in A, or it excites me or it’s the right thing to do. That’s it. No secret agendas,
b) I don’t think my audience owes me anything. It’s always their turn,
c) I’m in a hurry to make mistakes and get feedback and get that next idea out there. I’m not in a hurry, at all, to finish the “bigger” project, to get to the finish line,
d) I do things where I actually think I’m right, as opposed to where I think succeeding will make me successful. When you think you’re right, it’s more fun and your passion shows through,
e) I’ve tried to pare down my day so that the stuff I actually do is pretty well leveraged. That and I show up. Showing up is underrated.”

6) Be in it for the long haul. Things rarely come easy. Make the journey worth it. Chip away at success. Seth says — “Listen instead to your real customers, to your vision and make something for the long haul. Because that’s how long it’s going to take, guys.”

7) Decide if you’re a freelancer or entrepreneur. In the Bootstrapper’s Bible, Seth teaches us that a freelancer sells their talents. While they may have a few employees, they’re doing a job without a boss, but not running a business. There’s no exit strategy or pot of gold, but they make their own hours and be their own boss. Examples include layout artists, writers, consultants, film editors, landscapers, architects, translators, and musicians. Seth writes that an entrepreneur is trying to build something bigger than themselves. They take calculated risk and focus on growth. An entrepreneur is willing to receive little pay, work long hours, and take on great risk in exchange for the freedom to make something big, something that has real market value.

8) It’s like walking through a maze. Seth on building a business from scratch — “Learn as you go. Change as you go. Building a business from scratch is like walking through a maze with many, many doors. Once you open one, 100 new doors present themselves. As you move your way through the maze, you need to stop and check your location. Look at a map. If you’re in the wrong place move. But if you’ve discovered a new place, there’s nothing wrong with exploiting it.”

9) Everyone is not your customer. Seth teaches us the key to failure – “the key to failure is trying to please everyone.” Listen to your real customers. It’s not the media, the investors, or the early adopters. Seth on everyone is not your customer – “The media wants overnight successes (so they have someone to tear down). Ignore them. Ignore the early adopter critics that never have enough to play with. Ignore your investors that want proven tactics and predictable instant results. Listen instead to your real customers …” Seth on figuring out what your customers really want — “Most people have no clue what they want, and if you ask them, you’ll get a lame answer. Most people don’t know they want Pretty Woman or Slumdog Millionaire. They don’t know they want Purple Cow or one of your killer articles. So if you want to have an impact, all you can do is lead. You can’t ask.”

These are the 10 things I take from his 25 lessons and more of it can be found on:

Skinput Device - Chris Harrison

What is Skinput? Skinput is where you input data by the sound tabs of vibration on your arm/palm on  a projected touch screen interface.

I love the concept of skin touch when I go running or doing something physical without having to carry any device. This is the way to go in future to replace the ipods. The best thing is that you do not need to scratch the surface of your body in any way. I could see this as a dog training device and some other usage.
