I have often wondered why some relationships fail and why some are successful? Why people like another and dislike the other? Why are we attracted to people who "look up" or respect us? The simple reason is that these people whom we like are enabling us to be the best versions of ourselves. We all want to grow, developed and be known for something and be appreciated.
What is the purpose of a relationship? A common purpose is for you to help the other be the best version of him/herself. It is one where we are challenged and encouraged to become the best version of ourselves. It goes two ways, and that is the most ideal. The word, yours or mine should eventually be ours or we. In a relationship, it is about 2 people becoming one in unison. The word "I" should soon be invisible in a mature relationship. The thinking should be us, ours and we.
